Business footfall increases for Jubilee weekend

UK businesses saw an increase in footfall during the Queen's Jubilee weekend, research from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) shows.

The figures show total UK footfall increased by 6.9% over the four-day weekend compared with the average for May 2022. The increase for the whole week totalled 17.1% compared to the month.

Thursday (2 June) was the best performing day, with a 45.6% improvement in footfall, followed by Wednesday at 44.4%.

High streets saw the strongest performance with a 3.1% growth compared with the average for May 2022.

The report comes days after the BRC announced the total footfall for May decreased by 12.5% year-on-three-year, still a 0.6% improvement from April of this year.

Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive of the BRC, said:

"The public took to the streets for the Jubilee celebrations, with retail footfall enjoying significant improvements over the early parts of the long weekend. More people hit the shops, with many on the hunt for Jubilee decorations, garden accessories and new outfits.

"It was great to see so many people out celebrating and shopping at their favourite local destinations - a welcome boost for retail businesses reliant on store performance, particularly on the high street."
